What 20+Years of Building Custom Decks in San Diego Has Taught Us About Railings
Lesson 1: Salt Air Destroys Cheap Decks and Railings — Fast
In the early 2000s, we installed a lot of pressure-treated wood and picket railings. We would recommend composites or other more durable materials but budgets don’t always permit; and composites were relatively new. Within 5–7 years, many showed rot, or needed paint or stain from exposure to the marine environment. What we do now:
- Almost exclusively marine-grade stainless steel or powder-coated stainless for frames and top rails.
- Horizontal cable and glass systems dominate because they have fewer crevices where salt can hide and corrode.
- We’ve learned to specify all of our own fasteners and hardware — it costs a little more upfront but saves thousands in future repairs.
- Composite products are great for decking but hit and miss for railings; we build our own.
Lesson 2: Views Are Everything in San Diego
Homeowners don’t want their ocean, bay, or canyon views blocked by bulky wood pickets. That realization drove our shift from traditional railings to modern systems.Biggest evolution we’ve seen:

After 23 years, we’ve repaired or replaced hundreds of decks and railings. These mistakes show up again and again:
- Wrong material for the coast — Using standard steel or untreated wood that fails in 5–10 years.
- Poor post attachment — Undersized or improperly flashed posts that rot the deck framing. Bad hardware or the wrong hardware.
- Incorrect cable tension or glass thickness — Leading to sagging cables or scary flex in high winds.
- Ignoring code spacing — Balusters or cables more than 4 inches apart (or 3 inches for cables in some cases) — a red flag during inspections.
- Forgetting future maintenance access — Beautiful curves that make cleaning or repairs a nightmare. Build with intent to service later; hopefully not but locking yourself out is tougher than service built.

Early in our career, curved decks were rare and expensive. Today they’re a signature feature in modern San Diego homes. What our history taught us about curves:
- Precision bending and roll forming are non-negotiable for smooth, professional results.
- Compound curves (bending in two directions) work beautifully on sloped lots but require expert modeling.
- Glass and cable systems handle curves far better than traditional wood or picket railings.
- Done right, a curved railing becomes the architectural highlight of the entire deck.
Lesson 5: 2026 Trends We’re Installing Right Now
From what we’re seeing on job sites this year:
- Frameless and topless glass systems with slim stainless top rails.
- Matte black powder-coated aluminum paired with horizontal cables.
- Integrated LED lighting in curved handrails for nighttime safety and drama.
- Sustainable choices — Recycled stainless and low-iron glass.
- Organic, flowing curves that follow the natural contours of the land instead of perfect circles.
